Kansas State University:
350.000 US-$ – that is the amount that the course “Security and Portfolio Analysis” at the Kansas State University manages. The Viadrina´s partner university has gone a long way which started all the way back in 1999, when the course was implemented. However, at the beginning one did not invest real money at the stock market. First, they ran a simulation because funds were not sufficient to effectively work with financial instruments.
In 2001, an alumni’s 250.000 US-$ donation changed everything. The course had to be redesigned at its basic structure. From this time on, one was able to invest real money. A year later, in fall 2002, the first investments were made. Ever since, the course proves its quality with a yearly return of more than 11%. Course structure and atmosphere in class are working. And this is exactly from what the European-University wants to benefit as well.
From the beginning, the project group is in close contact with Professor Eric Higgins, current lecturer of the course „Security and Portfolio Analysis“ at Kansas State. From him we obtained very helpful information about the course’s structure, its history, and development, as well as its performance over the years. Through Professor Higgins, we were also able to get in contact with a Kansas State alumnus who was enrolled in the course. From Mr. Wieden we were able to also hear about the other side’s story – the student’s perspective. He gave us just as a positive picture as Prof. Higgins did which even further boosted our enthusiasm. We greatly appreciate all the help and support that Professor Higgins and Mr. Wieden provided us with.
